I’ve been using StopTheMadness, Sessions, and, ever since Apple dropped support for old format extensions, a parade of ad blockers, none of which seem to be as effective as their pre-deprecation predecessors. They’re each available in the Mac App Store, and Underpass is in the iOS App Store too. StopTheMadness also supports Firefox and Chrome, although they don’t have free trials available at present.Īnd in case you’re wondering, I paid full price for my copies of StopTheMadness and Better (which is developed by Ind.ie) – and for Jeff’s other product, Underpass, an encrypted file transfer and chat app which doesn’t rely on any external services. If you’re unsure as to how effective StopTheMadness is, he currently has a free trial available: his website explains more. Jeff, its developer, probably knows about as much about the Mac and web services as anyone that I know – you’ll see a string of his valuable comments through my Mac articles here. I don’t understand how StopTheMadness does its job. And I haven’t seen any tracking ads for, well, since I installed Better. When I want to copy or use Safari’s contextual menu, StopTheMadness just works as you’d expect. The trouble with them both is that they’re so good at their jobs that I no longer notice how much they do for me: like all the best extensions, they just get on with it. The first is Jeff Johnson’s unique StopTheMadness, which fixes all those blocked features, and Better, which protects my privacy from trackers. I only use two Safari extensions now, both of which I strongly recommend. I’m not in the least averse to regular ads, and understand how many sites need their revenue, but so many sites now, even UK government services like the Met Office, feed a ludicrous number of tracking services. You can use it on both entertainment apps, such as Netflix, and video-calling platforms like Google Duo.Two things upset me about many websites: their blocking normal Mac features like contextual menus, autocomplete and copy, and tracking. When you leave an app that’s already playing some video content, it automatically scales it down to the corner so that you can watch it while working on something else. The process to use picture-in-picture on an Android phone is straightforward, and there’s not much you need to do. The multitasking feature is available for Android 8, launched in 2017, and above. Picture-in-picture mode on an Android phoneĪndroid phones have had a picture-in-picture mode long before any of their counterparts. You can hold the mini window’s edges and enlarge it, and you can also hover over it to reveal the pause and close buttons. On a web browser like Microsoft Edge, right-click twice on an active playback and select “Picture in picture mode.” On an offline app like “Movies and TV,” click the third button from the right on the control panel to switch to the picture-in-picture view. How you operate the picture-in-picture mode on a Windows PC is largely identical to what you do on a Mac. The majority of popular programs, such as Google Chrome and the built-in Movies and TV app, are compatible with Windows’ picture-in-picture mode. Windows 10 and Windows 11 offer a picture-in-picture facility as well, and it works with both local files and any video stream you come across online. In that case, hit the full-screen option and try again. Some websites like YouTube may also refuse to work with your iPhone’s PiP mode even though the browser is compatible. If you cannot trigger the picture-in-picture mode, make sure it’s turned on from Settings > General > Picture in Picture. You can touch the mini window to reveal playback controls. So, while watching a movie on Netflix, just swipe up to return to the homescreen, and the playback will continue in a floating window. While the playback is active, all you have to do is switch to a different app or swipe up to go home, and the video will automatically begin playing in a small thumbnail in the screen’s corner. Unlike macOS, you don’t have to press any option to activate the PiP mode on an iPhone.
